Keira doing better
July 2, 2008
So I went to see Keira and Conor last night. Had a nice cuddle with Conor. He always looks so scared when he comes out of his isolette but I guess that shouldnt surprise me considering he should be still in the womb for another 8 weeks. Keira’s color had improved. She was on a c-pap and also had a tube coming out of her mouth. This tube goes down to her stomach and releases any air that has escaped from the cpap into her tummy instead of her lungs. So it was upsetting to see her like that. But she was breathing well and doing better than earlier that day.
I havnt been able to go in yet today, SHaun and I will be going tonight (real pain in the butt to not be able to drive myself!). But I called the nurse and Keira had only a couple spells where she didnt breathe last night. The doctor had just took a look at her and they were taking her off of the cpap and starting her over again on her feedings. So that would mean she is doing a lot better!! She is fighting her infection and the antibiotics seem to be working. Hopefully she keeps on getting better.
It was so hard for me to have her not do well. Especially when there is nothing I can physically do to help. I just kept on praying.
Needing prayers

Keira has some sort of infection but we dont know what yet. Last night she started to have more periods of apnea (not breathing) and it continued today. When I was there it was happening a lot. They have done a lot of testing and we know there are no white blood cells in her urine (which is good) and she doesnt have meningitis. We should know what it is w/in 24 to 48 hours. But the neonatologist figures it is a blood infection. She is on general antibiotics and has been moved back to level 3 care. The Dr called me at 530 to let me know that she is now on c-pap (oxygen being blown into her face) and her apnea periods had slowed but if they increase again she will be put on a machine to breath for her. She was really pale when I saw her this afternoon and it broke my heart. Her temp was normal which is good. I cant touch her right now as she cant handle any extra stimulation. Im glad I got to do kangaroo care w/ her last night. She was fine then.
I cant handle any more bad news!!! The pregnancy was so rough from the start, I just want their time in NICU to go smoothly. The nurse said it is not life threatening right now but I still worry. I am going back tonight to see how she is doing. She is my little princess and I just keep praying that she will heal soon. It will take a day or so for her to feel better.
Conor is doing well. I got to kangaroo care him yesterday (hold him against my skin) as well as today. IT is so cute b/c whenever I talk he tries to look up at me. He is just short of 4 lbs and Keira’s weight last night was 1625 g (3 lb, 9 oz) which was good. The nurse did tell me that it is normal for a preemie to get at least one infection while staying in the NICU.
Ok, I just finished this post and the nurse called from NICU (the nurses there are awesome!). Keira is still just on the cpap but her color has improved and her apnea episodes have calmed down. She was alert when the nurse was talking to me and cried when her diaper was changed, cant believe Im saying this but I am very happy she cried!! She is off of her feedings of my milk for the time being and is on IV and is getting some electrolytes. I am so relieved to hear this news!! We still have the infection to fight but at least she has her breathing under control. How quickly God answers prayers!
